Two Vietnamese fishing boats and 11 crew members detained in Sabah

SANDAKAN (May 20): The Marine Operation Force (MOF) arrested two foreign fishing boats and 11 Vietnamese for encroachment and illegal fishing in Sabah waters early Thursday morning.

Sandakan Finance Ministry Deputy Commissioner Ahmad Ariffin said the two boats were detained off the North Sea coast of Pulau Langkayan after receiving reports of illegal fishing activity in the area.

Ahmad said among the detainees were 11 men, including the two boat captains, aged between 10 and 49.

The MOF approaches one of the fishing boats for inspection.

The inspection revealed that none of the crew and boats had valid permits to conduct fishing activities in Sabah waters issued by the Malaysian Department of Fisheries.

MOF seized the two fishing boats, eight sets of equipment for catching sea cucumbers and several barrels containing sea cucumbers. The value of the seizure was estimated at RM2,873,000, Ahmad said in a statement. friday.

Ahmad said the case will be investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 for engaging in fishing activities in Malaysian waters without a valid permit and the Immigration Act 1959/63 for illegal entry.
