The police and Keiki make the whole fishing team

The South Kohala Community Policing Section of the Hawai’i Police Department congratulated all winners of the Kohala Keiki Fishing Derby on Saturday, July 23 in Kawaihae at the Pua Ka ‘Ilima ‘O Kawaihae Cultural Surf Park.

Over 60 keiki, ages 5 to 17, from North and South Kohala enjoyed perfect fishing conditions with warm sunny skies. During the event, personnel from the South Kohala Hawai’i Fire Department visited the children on their jet skis. Personnel from the State of Hawaii’s Departments of Lands and Natural Resources and Aquatics Division also participated in the tournament and provided participants with numerous educational materials and lessons on fishing and hunting.

Officers would like to especially thank all community members and organizations that made this event possible, including Body Glove Boat, HPD’s Area 2 Traffic Enforcement Unit, HPD Chaplin Lani Larrua, Nakahara Store, Underground Pizza, Dairy Queen, Waikoloa Luxury Cinemas, Panda Express, VASH, Anuenue Shave Ice, Earls Lunch Shop, Waimea Coffee Company, Starbucks, Hawaii Island Creations, Quicksilver, Village Burger, Ace Hardware, Parker Ranch Center, Keep Puako Beautiful, Nakupuna, God Squad, US Army Corp of Engineers, Big Islands Tents, Hulakai, Original Big Island Shave Ice Company, Hawai’i Big Game and Fishing, Rebel Kitchen, Balera Art Studio, Foster’s Kitchen, and Hawai’i Island Security and Safety Professional Association. Over $2,000 in gift cards, merchandise and prizes were awarded to participating keiki and their families.
