CITY OF CALAPAN –– Four fishermen were arrested Monday for illegal fishing in the town of Buenavista, in the province of Marinduque, according to a report from the Mimaropa police station (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan).

Police arrested the captain of the boat Manuelito Mengua, 45; assistant boat captain Marino Jugno, 59; Chanliee Mengua, 27; and Judireck Catamio, 22, all residents of Barangay Caigangan around 6:30 am in Barangay Yook.

The Maritime Police of Marinduque (MARPSTA) and the Police of Buenavista, during a maritime patrol operation, arrested the suspects while they were illegally fishing with active gear (“makinilya”) about four kilometers from the shore of Yook .

A fishing boat worth 90,000 pesos, a diesel engine worth 20,000 pesos, a set of fishing nets worth 300,000 pesos and a catch of fish weighing about 60 kilograms of a value of 4,800 pesos were confiscated.

The suspects and the evidence were temporarily brought to MARPSTA in Barangay Balanacan in the town of Mogpog.

The suspects face charges of illegal fishing.
